In recent years there has been a lot of research into the incidence of suicide among gay and lesbian (homosexual) people. The findings of these studies have not been consistent, but most researchers do agree on one point - gay and lesbian people are at far higher risk of suicide than people who are heterosexual.

There are many reasons for this. One is that homosexual activity is illegal or considered wrong in many countries, and this can cause gay and lesbian people to feel isolated and become depressed.

It is important to remember, though, that there are millions of gay and lesbian people all over the world, living happy and fulfilled lives. Many have felt depressed at some time but have come through their difficulties.

People who are gay or lesbian can find it helpful to talk to someone about their sexuality and feelings. This is particularly true for young gay and lesbian people, and for people who are isolated and do not have gay and lesbian friends.

Where do I go?

Gay and lesbian people can feel frightened and isolated by their sexuality, and many hide their sexual identity.

They may live in a country where homosexual activity is illegal, or be worried about religious teachings. They may be scared of being rejected by their family and friends.Sometimes it seems that there is nobody to talk to.

Befrienders offer a service that is completely confidential. You don't have to give your name - you can remain anonymous. Everything you say will remain completely confidential.

A befriender will not judge you or tell you what to do. But a befriender will listen to you.
